2019 Otis Music Camp Recap
The 12th annual Otis Music Camp took place from June 3 to June 14, 2019 at Mercer University’s Townsend School of Music, with a recording-breaking 74 campers attending this year, some of whom traveled from other states such as Florida and Virginia to participate. From songwriting and producing to collaborating with those around them, campers learned the intricacies of the music industry from coaches and presenters that have worked in that industry professionally. The Foundation was honored to have renowned music director Rob Shirakbari, who has produced for legends such as Dionne Warwick, and other coaches that have traveled from various states and cities to spread their knowledge to our young musicians. Presenters included the likes of Maconite and Music Attorney Jackie Robinson, Alyssa Smith and Adam Fell from Quincy Jones Productions, Ceelo Green’s sister and founder of the Greenhouse Foundation Shedonna Green and many others. In addition, campers traveled to one of the country’s music capitals, Athens, Ga., to visit a musician’s resource space called Nuci’s Space, the Georgia Theater (where many artists such as Tyler the Creator have performed), manufacturing plant called Kindercore Vinyl, and the famous 40 Watt Club (that has been the stage for many artists including R.E.M and Nirvana). And finally, campers utilized their talents to create a work of art for the grand finale held on Saturday June 16, 2019 at the Grand Opera House in Downtown Macon. Performing to a packed house, campers sung, danced, and played their hearts out to their original songs that showcased what they had learned from the past two weeks.
