Otis Redding Memorial Marker to be Built in Jones County
Members of the Redding Family joined the Otis Redding Memorial Committee and community leaders in Gray, Ga. and Jones County on March 25 to announce the plans of a memorial marker honoring late soul legend Otis Redding.
“I’ve always wanted some recognition of Otis Redding and his part in the Gray-Jones community,” says Thad Childs, Jones County Market President of Morris Bank and Otis Redding Memorial Committee organizer. “This is a great way to get the official dedication that a legend so rightly deserves, and I’m so happy to see the project finally come to fruition."
“We are thrilled to see the plans for the memorial, and are so happy to have a part of Otis find a place in his hometown of Gray/Jones County,” says Mrs. Zelma Redding, Redding’s widow and president of the Otis Redding Foundation. “And we are very grateful to Mr. Childs for initiating the project.”
Members of the committee will join Mrs. Zelma Redding, Karla Redding-Andrews (Redding’s daughter) and Luther Rodgers Redding (Redding’s brother) and other community citizens held the press conference in front of the W.E. Knox Community Civic Center to announce plans for erecting a memorial marker and the creation of the Otis Redding Museum to honor Mr. Redding’s legacy and involvement in the community in which he lived.
